Fundación Wiese, in partnership with the Swiss Government, has taken a major step forward in safeguarding Peru’s cultural heritage. Recently, Switzerland’s Federal Office of Culture (FOC) approved a funding request for a project aimed at cataloging and preserving information on the cultural assets of the El Brujo archaeological complex—one of the most significant sites on Peru’s northern coast.
About the Project
The Comprehensive Cataloging of Museum-Quality Objects from the El Brujo Archaeological Complex project aims to catalog 4,241 archaeological objects, share them through the Foundation’s digital catalog, and publish the data in various formats to ensure public access. It also seeks to promote scientific research exchanges and fulfill the data requirements of Peru’s National Register of Movable Cultural Property for all El Brujo collections.
Significance of the Partnership
This partnership not only aids in preserving Peru’s cultural heritage but also enhances international cooperation around the conservation and social use of this valuable legacy. Once cataloged, El Brujo’s collections will gain increased visibility, making them more accessible for future research, education, conservation, museum exhibitions, publications, and capacity-building projects. Moreover, increased visibility of cultural heritage plays a key role in preventing the illicit trafficking of cultural assets.
Local Community Impact
- Open collections: This partnership ensures that the information on these cultural assets is preserved and made freely accessible to current and future generations.
- Historical awareness and civic engagement: By documenting and sharing the cultural and social use of these objects, the project honors the legacy of their creators, promoting a sense of belonging, respect for diversity, and active citizenship.
- Local social and economic development: The cataloged information supports the development of new educational and publishing projects for the local community and can enhance the value proposition of small businesses near the site.
We thank the Federal Office of Culture of Switzerland for its trust in Fundación Wiese. We hope this project not only contributes to the preservation of Peru’s cultural heritage but also inspires greater interest and appreciation for the country’s rich history.
