Fundación Wiese donates water, medicine, and food to communities affected by the oil spill in Urarinas, Loreto

The oil spill affected the main livelihood of the riverine communities of Cuninico and Marañón, who rely on the river for drinking water and traditional fishing for their food.

Fundación Wiese donated 887 water drums, 3,740 kg of food for communal kitchens, and medicines to help the native communities of the Urarinas district in the context of the environmental emergency.

About the Environmental Emergency

On September 16, the community of Cuninico reported seeing oil slicks in the water of the Cuninico River, due to a spill from the Norperuano pipeline. According to the Environmental Assessment and Oversight Agency (OEFA), 848,400 m² of water zones, 600 m² of a ravine, 154,200 m² of Cuninico ravine, and 660,000 m² of the left bank of the Marañón River were affected.

The oil spill directly impacted the main livelihood of the Cuninico and Marañón river communities, as the river is their primary source of water and daily food.
