“Karen Leiva Mejía lived with her two young daughters in a rented house in the upper part of Jr. Atahualpa, in Chepén, which was completely destroyed. Her daughter, María de los Ángeles (9), had recently undergone heart surgery and needs to continue her follow-up visits in Lima. Karen's sister lives with her elderly parents in the same neighborhood, but they could not come to the distribution because they are elderly and were busy clearing the mud from their home. They were saved by a miracle last week when part of the roof collapsed due to the rains. The family received 30 kg of non-perishable food to help them for 10 days until Karen and her sister can return to selling food on the street.” commented Ingrid Claudet, General manager of Wiese Foundation.
Due to the emergency triggered by the sudden and intense rainfall, caused by the start of the rainy season, the presence of Cyclone Yaku, and the anomalous warming of the sea, since February, various areas of the country have been facing flooding and landslides, causing more than 60 deaths and affecting the health, homes, and livelihoods of thousands of families.
One of the most affected provinces is Chepén. According to the report from the Provincial Municipality of Chepén, as of March 27, 4,693 people were reported as affected, with 1,415 displaced, 1,731 homes affected, 377 rendered uninhabitable, and 44 destroyed.

About the intervention
To ensure that the aid reaches the most vulnerable people who have been most affected, on March 30, 31, and April 1, we carried out door-to-door registration, verifying on-site the damage and conditions of the potential beneficiary families for this second food delivery.
Later, as part of Fundación Wiese’s Humanitarian Aid Program, the distribution of 400 kits, each containing 15 kg of raw food, was organized for the most affected families in the hardest-hit areas of Chepén. The goal is to provide relief to these families' critical situation by addressing their food needs while they work to resume their economic activities.
Total number of families benefited: 400 (see table)
What’s in each food kit?
These food kits are designed to cover the needs of a family of four members for a 5-day period.
We will soon provide information on the next planned deliveries of dry food and other actions to support the most vulnerable affected.
At Fundación Wiese, we reaffirm our work and commitment to serving the most vulnerable communities in times of emergency and disaster. Learn more about our Program here.
